A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Tibet.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center's automatic measurement, an earthquake of approximately magnitude 6.9 occurred near Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region (28.54°N, 87.43°E) at 09:05 Beijing Time on January 7, 2025. The final magnitude will be determined by the official preliminary report.
When the earthquake struck, local residents widely reported strong shaking, with some buildings swaying. Preliminary reports indicate the epicenter was located in a high-altitude mountainous region with complex terrain, surrounded by a small number of villages and towns. As the earthquake occurred in the morning, most residents were indoors at the time. The specific extent of damage is still being verified.

Following the earthquake, relevant authorities swiftly activated emergency response protocols. The Tibet Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau and Shigatse Municipal Government have dispatched task forces to the epicenter area to assess the damage and organize rescue efforts.
