A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Maduo County in Golog Prefecture, Qinghai Province. No casualties
The China Earthquake Networks Center has officially determined that at 15:44 on January 8, 2025, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred in Maduo County, Guoluo Prefecture, Qinghai Province (34.79°N, 97.51°E), with a focal depth of 14 kilometers.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, approximately 65 kilometers from the county seat of Maduo. The average elevation within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter is about 4,270 meters, and the area is sparsely populated. No reports of casualties or property damage have been received so far.

Preliminary information indicates that due to the remote location of the epicenter with limited infrastructure, tremors were primarily felt in nearby villages and pastoral areas. The Maduo County government and relevant departments have activated emergency response plans, dispatching rescue teams to the epicenter for assessment. Simultaneously, coordination with surrounding regions has been strengthened to ensure timely resolution of post-earthquake safety hazards.
Experts indicate that Maduo County is situated within the seismically active zone of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where crustal movements occur frequently. This earthquake falls within the scope of normal geological activity. Currently, earthquake monitoring authorities are closely monitoring potential aftershocks and advise local residents to enhance their earthquake preparedness awareness.
