A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Tainan City, Taiwan, with strong tremors felt across Fujian Provin
According to the official measurement by the China Earthquake Networks Center,at 00:17 Beijing Time on January 21, 2025, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Tainan City, Taiwan (23.24°N, 120.51°E), with a focal depth of 14 kilometers. The earthquake caused strong shaking across the entire island of Taiwan. Significant tremors were felt in Quanzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, and Putian in Fujian Province, with some residents reporting mild shaking. Shaking was also reported in Ningbo, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and other areas.

As of now, the earthquake has resulted in 15 injuries in Tainan City, with some casualties already transported to hospitals for treatment. Building collapses occurred in Nansi District, Tainan City, trapping individuals inside. Local fire departments have swiftly mobilized rescue teams to the scene. The exact number of casualties and property damage is still being tallied.
Following the earthquake, Tainan City and surrounding areas experienced multiple aftershocks, includingmagnitude 4.3 and 4.0 tremors with focal depths ranging from 14 to 17 kilometers. Experts caution that aftershock activity may persist for some time, urging residents to remain vigilant, stay clear of hazardous areas, and closely monitor official rescue and safety updates.
