Taiwan Hit by Severe Cold Wave, Death Toll May Reach 78
According to Taiwan's China Timeson the 9th, persistent strong cold fronts have triggered a series of suspected sudden deaths across Taiwan due to the abrupt temperature drop. Data from Taiwan's meteorological department shows that since the cold front arrived on the 8th, minimum temperatures in areas north and central of Taiwan have plummeted to 7 degrees Celsius. As many as 20 counties and cities have issued persistent low-temperature alerts, indicating the cold wave will continue to envelop the entire island in the coming days.
According to statistics from fire departments across Taiwan's counties and cities, from midnight to 9 p.m. on the 8th, a total of 78 people across the island were found to have died suddenly, suspected to be due to the cold snap. Among them, Taipei City had the highest number of sudden deaths at 11, followed by Pingtung with 10 and Tainan with 9. The deceased were generally of advanced age. The Taichung City Fire Department revealed that among cardiac arrest patients transported to local hospitals, the youngest victim was already 54 years old.

Additionally, Taiwanese media previously reported that from mid-December to the end of last year, the island saw as many as 587 suspected deaths from sudden cardiac arrest outside hospitals due to the cold snap. Local medical experts noted that individuals with cardiovascular diseases, chronic illnesses, as well as heavy drinkers and smokers are all at high risk. Experts urged the public to enhance self-protection in cold environments, minimize outdoor activities, and particularly advised those with weaker constitutions to take proactive measures to stay warm.
Taiwan authorities are closely monitoring weather developments and urging relevant departments to intensify rescue and preventive measures in response to the extreme cold spell that may persist for several days.
