According to a notice from the Changshi Town People's Government, the landslide occurred around 3 a.m. that day. The incident site was not within the designated geological hazard monitoring area. Heavy rainfall caused the mountain slope to become unstable, resulting in the collapse of residential buildings. Prior to this, local authorities had issued warnings and evacuated residents from the geological hazard monitoring areas, but did not anticipate landslides occurring in non-monitored zones.

The Guowa Township government has also confirmed the landslide incident. Officials stated that rescue efforts are ongoing, but they are currently unable to provide further details.

According to meteorological monitoring, from the night of May 21 to the early morning of May 22, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall occurred across Dafang County. Data from the County Party Committee's Publicity Department indicates that areas under the jurisdiction of Changshi Town and Guowa Township experienced torrential rainfall. Among these, the cumulative rainfall at the Piao Jing Pingtang Station reached 211.8 millimeters, while the Guowa Guangming Station recorded 183.7 millimeters, ranking among the highest in the county.
