A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Lhaze, Tibet, with noticeable tremors.
At 5:11 a.m. on May 12, the China Earthquake Networks Center officially recorded a magnitude 5.5 earthquake in Lazi County, Shigatse City, Tibet (28.91°N, 87.54°E), with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor was distinctly felt, waking some residents. Following the quake, Lhaze County swiftly activated its emergency response. Townships immediately launched earthquake damage assessments. Fire and rescue teams have arrived at the epicenter. Collapsed buildings and casualties are currently being verified.

At 05:11 on May 12, the China Earthquake Networks Center measured the magnitude of this earthquake at 5.5, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 28.91 degrees north latitude and 87.54 degrees east longitude. The average elevation within a 5-kilometer radius is approximately 5,019 meters. Surrounding villages include Qiugu Village, Xiabuja Village, Jiedang Village, and Tong'atolo Village. The epicenter is 21 kilometers from the county seat of Lhaze.
At the moment the earthquake struck, distinct tremors were felt across multiple regions. In some homes, furnishings shook violently, and residents were jolted awake by the seismic activity.
No large-scale building collapses or severe damage have been reported thus far. According to preliminary assessments by Mangpu Township, all residents have been safely evacuated to temporary housing units, and township officials are conducting door-to-door visits to provide reassurance.

Following the earthquake, the Lazi County government immediately activated a Level IV emergency response. The county fire and rescue brigade promptly dispatched firefighting and rescue vehicles and personnel to the epicenter.
The Tibet Autonomous Region Earthquake Administration has dispatched an on-site working group to collaborate with local authorities in assessing post-earthquake conditions, enhancing seismic monitoring and trend analysis, and promptly reporting to higher authorities.
The China Earthquake Administration is coordinating with the China Earthquake Networks Center to assist local authorities in emergency response efforts, ensuring the stable operation of critical infrastructure such as communications, water supply, and power in the affected areas.
